II.2.2. Teachers’ Support
The Teachers’ training and support Project and the Project for Elementary education have been merged in order to make it more effective and more easily monitored. Ten schools for displaced children were selected for partnership each of which shall ideally have 10 TfS sponsored scholars who will be given free tuition by the school in exchange for teachers’ training and payment of the salaries of two teachers for this academic year, which will begin by the end of July 2010.

The other old scholars will be asked to transfer to the ten selected schools so that TfS will continue to pay their fees. Those scholars who can not move to the ten partner schools will be dismissed from the scholarship.

A donation made by a church in the UK will allow us to give an extra support to some two displaced schools; Fulla Falls and Kimu schools in Soba Aradi for this academic year. The donation, a sum of 500 sterling pounds; 400 sterling pounds for Fulla Falls and 100 sterling pounds for Kimu School will be delivered to the mentioned schools by the end of July.

Until January 2010, the number of scholars in this program was five. Two were studying electricity, and three were studying general mechanics. Three students graduated in April this year. Hence, the number of scholars in this project is currently two.

Together for Sudan intends to induct 25 new scholars into the Vocational Training program this year. Priority is given to young women and we are currently attempting to encourage them to apply. A committee will sit by the end of this month or soon thereafter to make the selection.

The number of patients attending the outreach was 2300 and despite a lack of medicines and medical personnel to support outpatients the doctors were able to see nearly all but one hundred of them.
During this TFS outreach around 200 eye operations were provided nearly all of them cataract operations.

III.2. HIV/AIDS Awareness Outreaches
HIV/AIDS project comprises of HIV/AIDS awareness outreaches and follow up visits. The project was implemented in the outskirt of Khartoum state where vulnerable and displaced persons live and the project mainly targeted youth in the age of 15 to 39 years. The report reflects the activities from January to June 2010.

The overall objective of the project is prevention against the spread of the HIV/AIDS through education, in particular among displaced persons living in the Khartoum vicinity.

The expansion of HIV/AIDS infection and the high rate of spread require development of new skills in the awareness efforts through training of volunteers in communication skills and effective educational methods and to train volunteers from areas of IDPs and vulnerable persons who expected to work as trainers to enlighten their communities about HIV/AIDS.

Achievements

  • TfS Country Coordinator and acting Project Coordinator were hosted in the Khartoum state broadcasting (Radio) to point out TfS experience in combating HIV/AIDS in February 2010.
  • From 1st January 2010 and up to 31st March 2010, Together for Sudan carried out three awareness outreaches and six follow up visits which reached 2,036 persons
  • TfS carried out TOT training about Direct Interpersonal Communication which targeted 21 persons in the period of 14th to 19th February 2010.

The methodologies used on the awareness outreaches by TfS trainers were lectures, open discussions (brain storming), and use of slides. The type of teaching aids used included; flip charts, pamphlets, posters and role plays. The following issues were discussed:

  • Basic facts about HIV/AIDS
  • Sexual transmitted infections including usage of condoms
  • Voluntary counseling and testing
  • Impact of HIV/AIDS in the community
  • How to care for infected persons at Home
  • Treatment (usage, adherence and impact)
  • The role of PLWHA association, as the association is now active once again and provides some help to infected people with the help of UNAIDS
  • Experience sharing by HIV/AIDS carriers

III.3. Solar Lighting Panels Project
The objective of the project is to supply light for educational and health centers in areas off the electricity grid where displaced and disadvantages people live.

The total number of solar panels originally installed in Khartoum vicinity was 12 plus one panel in New Halfa and one in Kenana.

Since general electricity has been widely connected recently in Khartoum, the Solar Project was closed in Khartoum in September 2008. Six panels were handed over to CBOs and six ones were removed from their sites due either to electricity connection or misuse and one panel was stolen the Kenana’s panel is still to be handed.

IV Nuba Mountains

Background
Together for Sudan started its work in the Nuba Mountains in 2003 and established a sub-office in February 2005. Since then, TfS work has expanded to include beneficiaries from areas outside Kadugli including those formerly under the administration of the Sudan People Liberation Army.

TfS has made its Kadugli sub–office a Teaching Resource Centre with the purpose of setting up an ongoing educational program and addressing the enormous gap in education, both basic and vocational, so as to benefit both women and children in South Kordofan State.

Other activities such as Eye Care outreaches which are conducted twice yearly and include a considerable number of eye operations and eye treatment are coordinated in Kadugli sub-office which also monitors TfS solar panels installed to provide light to schools and health centers in areas out side Kadugli town where electricity is not available.

IV.1.Educational Projects
Due to lack of funding, some of the educational projects are on hold as such the activities of the Educational Projects in the Nuba Mountains are now restricted only to teachers’ training.

IV.1.1 Teacher Training
Most of the teachers’ trainings in the Nuba Mountains from 2005 to 2008 were funded by the British Department for Overseas Development (DFID) and two were funded by Zain, a telecommunication company working in the Sudan.

In the period between January and June 2010, a basic teachers’ training course in modern teaching methods and development of teaching aids was conducted in Kadugli town from 23rd January to 14th February 2010. The training was funded by the Body Shop Foundation and facilitated by three lecturers from the University of Dilling Faculty of Education and a total of 25 teachers participated in the training.

IV.II. Educational Support Project

IV.II.1. Eye Care Project
Eye Care outreaches which are conducted twice yearly and include a considerable number of eye operations and eye treatment are coordinated in Kadugli sub-office which also monitors TfS supported schools as well as TfS solar panels that installed to provide light to schools and health centers in areas out side Kadugli town where electricity is not available.

One outreach and a post operative were executed in the reporting period, in which 2,215 patients were seen, 255 patients were operated on and eleven cases were referred to Khartoum. 292 patients were offered lenses and glasses and medicines were provided to 940 patients. Three of the eleven who were referred to Khartoum were operated successfully. The rest will undergo their operations as soon as they come to Khartoum.

The table below shows the patients seen, operations carried out, glasses distributed and medicines used in Nuba Mountains.

Environmental Health Training & Eye Problems for Teachers & Community leaders
Two training courses were organized in Kadugli on health education for 30 teachers and 31 community leaders in May and June 2010 respectively.

The objective of the trainings was to enlighten people at remote areas of Kadugli of the importance of hygiene, clean water, healthy food, protection against HIV/AIDS and prevention of eye diseases. The trainees are expected to spread the information acquired to their communities directly as well as indirectly through their pupils.

IV.II.2. Solar Lighting Panels in Nuba Mountains
Together for Sudan received a grant from Canada Fund to install three panels in 2005/2006 in the Nuba Mountains. This project expanded when ten panels funded by Canada fund through CARE international were installed in April 2007 to make a total of thirteen. Of the 13, three panels in Karkaria Biara, Frandalla and Catcha were stolen. The battery of one panel at Saraf Eljamous’s was stolen and the panel was removed from the site due to lack of insecurity in the school, therefore nine panels are currently functioning.

Since Together for Sudan responds to the community’s requests, TfS applied again to Canada Fund for funding to install new panels in the Nuba Mountains. Meanwhile the panels which were removed from Khartoum area will be installed in Nuba Mountains after rainy season.

Achievements

  • 203,040 persons have benefited from the solar panels in Nuba Mountains according to last monitoring done.

Constraints

  • It is difficult to monitor the solar panels during the rainy season, because roads are unpaved.
