Matti
(centre) with TfS staff in Khartoum
Matti Kay spent a month of her gap year as a volunteer in
the TfS office in Khartoum, before going up to Bristol
University in the autumn. She writes:
I decided to volunteer for TfS as it is a charity that covers a broad
range of issues affecting the Sudanese. I was very impressed with the
work that TfS is doing especially in such difficult circumstances with
the result of the referendum, the social change and upheaval and the
lack of funding to keep certain projects running. I believe the work TFS
is doing for Sudan is very worthwhile and I do hope that they will be
able to carry on with these beneficial projects with the help of more
funding.

During my short one month period of volunteering with TfS
I experienced first hand how TfS is improving the lives of
many Sudanese. TfS covers a broad range of projects in
Sudan. The main focus of TfS is on education and health -
two subjects I feel are immensely important. I was able to
monitor and write reports about the scholarship programme,
the teacher training programme and the eye care clinic.
I attended two eye care clinics where over 100 patients
are treated each day with medication or referred to the
hospital. I was very impressed at how quickly and
efficiently patients were diagnosed and treated and how
relatively easy the whole process was. With further funding
this project could certainly expand and help a lot more of
the population.
Whilst in Khartoum I visited all ten of the schools where
TfS was funding the training and salaries of a number of
teachers and where ten scholars received free places in each
school. With the work TfS does and the funding it offers,
both the students and the teachers have benefited enormously
by receiving education when otherwise they wouldn't be able
to afford it. These projects are also hugely beneficial to
the society as they provide educated students and trained
teachers that will be able to contribute positively to
Sudan’s future.
The work TFS does is impressive, beneficial and necessary
for Sudan. I very much enjoyed volunteering for TFS and will
continue to support their laudable work.
We are very grateful to Matti for her commitment and help
to TFS and for these comments.
